San Salvador is a scenic, charming and attractive island of Bahamas in Central America. The crystal clear ocean waters, sandy beaches, exotic caverns and steep hills slopes contribute to make San Salvador the perfect destination for a getaway. Apart from these attractions, San Salvador is also house to numerous interesting places and the Dixon Light House is one of them.

Dixon Light House was setup in the year 1856 and has been guiding to show way to the ships since then. It was named after John Dixon who was the owner of the plantation where the light house was built. It is still operational and one of the few manually operated light houses in the world. It is the last on its kind light house operational in the Bahamas. The lighthouse keepers operate it by refueling the 400,000 candle powered light house by hand every 2 hours and 15 minutes. Light from a kerosene lamp is reflected by a set of prisms placed in a manner that the light travel many miles to guide the ships. The light travels around 19 miles.

Dixon light house has become an interesting tourist spot as the light house keepers not only maintain the lighthouse, they also give the tourists a tour of the place. People can view the machinery in operation while the keeper explains the mechanism of its working. The light house is fueled by kerosene and it is amazing to see from the top as kerosene gets pumped to ‘light’ the mantle. The deck also offers the best view of San Salvador and the inland lakes. Taking a walk around the deck, the person can get enchanting, breath taking 360 degree view of the island.
